Huskies Gain 42-7 Football Win on Senior Day

St. Cloud, Minn. – St. Cloud State running backs Brandon Geiss (Shorewood, IL) and Michael Graham (Oakdale) each scored two touchdowns and quarterback Mitch Watkins threw for a touchdown and rushed for a second as the Huskies went on to a 42-7 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win over MSU Moorhead Saturday afternoon at Husky Stadium.
It was Senior Day at St. Cloud State and the Huskies dressed 25 seniors for the regular season home finale. Graham, one of the seniors finished the game with 42 yards rushing on six carries to go with the two touchdowns.
Geiss, a true freshman rushed for 131 yards on 19 carries for his second straight 100-yard rushing game and third of the season. He also had a 39-yard touchdown run called back on a holding call. Junior quarterback Mitch Watkins (Jerseyville, IL) completed nine of 17 passes for 113 yards and one touchdown and also rushed for 69 yards and one touchdown.
Defensively, the Huskies intercepted three passes and had four quarterback sacks. Senior corners Tyler Krueger (Milwaukee, WI) and Kenny Patrick (Milwuakee, WI), and red-shirt first year player Mike Street (St. Cloud) each picked off a pass. Krueger notched his second of the season, while Patrick and Street’s were the first of their careers. Senior linebacker Matt McLagan (Minneapolis) led all players with 12 tackles. Senior linebacker Darius Dotch (St. Paul) had six tackles, two tackles for loss and one quarterback sack.
St. Cloud State collected 412 yards of total offense including 299 yards on the ground. MSU Moorhead gained 249 yards of offense and Wegner completed 18 of 28 passes for 131 yards.
Geiss culminated the Huskies second drive of the game with a 42-yard touchdown run to give St. Cloud State a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. On the ensuing possession, MSU Moorhead moved the ball downfield and quarterback Tyler Wegner found wide receiver Bruce Green on a 30-yard pass completion for a touchdown. The drive lasted nine plays, 81 yards and took 4:24 off the clock and tied the game at 6:22 of the first quarter. St. Cloud State quarterback Mitch Watkins finished off the Huskies next drive with a 13-yard run to give the Huskies a 14-7 lead at 3:28 in the first.
After playing a scoreless second quarter, the Huskies scored twice in the third quarter to take a 28-7 lead. Geiss scored his second touchdown of the day on a one-yard run and with 1:03 left in the third, sophomore wide receiver Fred Williams (Milwaukee, WI) pulled in a Mitch Watkins pass for a 28-yard touchdown play.
Michael Graham accounted for all of the fourth quarter scoring, with a two-yard touchdown run at 13:13 and a 19-yard scoring run at 9:45.
St. Cloud State is 7-3 overall and 7-2 in the NSIC. MSU Moorhead dropped to 2-8 overall and 2-7 in the NSIC. The Huskies will finish the regular season at Minnesota State University Mankato next Saturday.
