St. Cloud, Minn. - Led by Ashley Shields (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) and Jen Waterman (Andover), the St. Cloud State University volleyball squad (4-16, 2-10 NSIC) came up big against Minnesota State University, Mankato (13-10, 8-4 NSIC) on Saturday, Oct. 18, with a 3-2 set victory on Homecoming Weekend.
Today's win marked the first Husky victory over the Mavericks since the 2004 season, when SCSU swept MSU in both matches that year. The Huskies continue to lead the all-time series over the Mavericks, 52-39, dating back to the 1970 season.
St. Cloud State was victorious in the first two sets by scores of 27-25 and 25-20. The Mavericks bounced back in sets three and four to win 25-18 and 25-21. In the fifth and final frame, the Huskies took the match with a 15-10 win.
Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Shields led the Huskies with a season-high 20 kills (.362) and four digs. Kayla Tschida (Holdingford) sparked the Huskies with a season second-best 12 kills in the middle and a career-high nine total blocks (2s, 7a). Running the offensive scheme today for SCSU was sophomore setter Jen Waterman with 47 assists. Waterman also chipped in four kills (.267), 13 digs and a career-best seven block assists in the front row.
A big spark in the back row was team captain Andreana Pieper (Williams). The senior libero racked up a season-best 36 digs against the Mavericks, and totaled 58 digs on the weekend against Southwest Minnesota State and Minnesota State.
Also garnering career highs in the digs category for St. Cloud State was junior transfer Stephanie Coxon (Waukegan, Ill.) with 14 digs and first year defensive specialist Chelsea Nagle (Preston, Minn.) with 15 digs. Of note, Coxon also served up a career best 13 points for the Huskies in the match today.
With the second NSIC win in school history, the Huskies improve to 4-16 overall in 2008. St. Cloud State will play host to the University of Mary on Friday, Oct. 24, and to Northern State on Saturday, Oct. 25. The first serves are slated for 7 p.m. and 4 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall.
