Xcel Energy Foundation will support the "Project Lead the Way" Scholarship
Monday, July 27, 2009
The Xcel Energy Foundation has donated $10,000 to help support the "Project Lead the Way" Scholarship within the Department of Environmental and Technological Studies. The gift was part of $746,000 in grant money that Xcel Energy awarded to education and environmental nonprofits in Minnesota.
Xcel's purpose in grantmaking is focused on economic sustainability, education, access to arts and culture, and the environment. The grants are the first of three cycles this year, during which it will give out more than $4.25 million throughout the state.
“Project Lead the Way” is a nationally acclaimed middle and high school pre-engineering program created to prepare a future workforce for high tech, high wage jobs. Minnesota is a national leader in the number of schools and students participating in the program, but currently there is a shortage of teachers qualified to educate those growing number of students.
The scholarship is available to students majoring in the technology education within the Department of Environmental and Technological Studies and will prepare them to teach in the middle and high schools.
The Xcel Energy Foundation has given more than $165,000 to St. Cloud State University for various projects and programs during the past 32 years.
The gift will be used as a portion of a matching grant funded by the Kern Family Foundation.
