American classics by Samuel Barber and Morten Lauridsen will be performed alongside recent, authentic root Japanese band works by Soichi Konagaya and Toshio Mashima. The SCSU Japan Net will present Japanese festival customs, attire, and traditions in the lobby preceding the concert, and Director of Bands Dr. Richard (Rik) K. Hansen, will give a special pre-concert talk on his residency experiences teaching in Japan and on the current state of rebuilding in Japan. Informative videos of the Triple Disaster of March 11, 2011 and Skype Interviews conveying profiles of courage from the Japanese people will be shown during the concert. Watchwords of the event, GANBARE JAPAN! [gahn-bah-ray] mean to adhere with tenacity. The mantra is used to encourage the Japanese people, who are undertaking a very difficult task.
