Dr. Paul J. Budde earned a Bachelors Degree in Instrumental Music Education from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (1993), a Masters Degree in Tuba Performance from the University of Minnesota (2004), and a Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Minnesota (2011).
He is currently teaching courses in music education at St. Cloud State University, including Introduction to Music Education, Introduction to Instruments, and Secondary Music Methods and will also supervise student teachers during their practicum in the public school system. In addition, he is currently on faculty at Gustavus Adolphus College (Euphonium and Tuba Instructor) and the University of St. Thomas (Music Theory Instructor).
Dr. Budde’s current research involves investigating various teaching methods in an effort to find more effective ways to teach tonguing / articulation to young musicians. His dissertation study, An Analysis of Methods for Teaching Middle School Band Students to Articulate (University of Minnesota, 2011) is a first step in this regard. In addition, he recently released a CD (Practice Room Grooves, available on iTunes) made up of warm-up exercises that serve as a means to improve intonation and time during independent practice.
Dr. Budde is an active performing musician (tuba) and clinician in and around the Twin Cities of Minnesota. His primary tuba instructors have been Jerry Young and Ross Tolbert, but he has also studied with Arnold Jacobs, Sam Pilafian, and Patrick Sheridan. He is a member of the St. Anthony Brass Quintet (www.stanthonybrass.com) and has played in numerous ensembles, including the Minnesota Orchestra, Encore Wind Ensemble, Lake Wobegon Brass Band, and the Saint Paul Civic Symphony among others.
In addition to teaching and performing, Paul is the creator and chairperson of Tubonium, a two-day tuba and euphonium workshop (held at Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, MN), bringing world-renowned guest artists from around the world to this Minnesota event. He has also served on the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Band Director’s Association.
