What will I gain from a degree in statistics?

A degree in statistics provides the student with the following:

  1. Ability to recognise patterns in data and to analyze data.
  2. Experience in preparing reports of statistical work that has been completed.
  3. A sense of ethics in the application of statistics and in consulting.
  4. An increased capacity for inquiry and critical judgment.
  5. An awareness of the extensive applicability of statistics.
Statistical Graph

The production of three-dimensional graphics using the statistical software package called "SAS" is one of the cutting-edge applications taught by Leonard Onyiah, professor of statistics at St. Cloud State University. Such applications are featured in Onyiah's 2005 textbook, "SAS Programming and Data Analysis: A Theory and Program-Driven Approach," published by the University Press of America.

Specific Objectives

  1. Basic knowledge in applying exploratory data analysis techniques.
  2. Basic statistical information for carrying out statistical procedures in nonparametric statistics, multivariate statistics, regression analysis, design of experiments and sample surveys.
  3. Intermediate knowledge about mathematical statistics based on a year-long course.
  4. A working knowledge of the statistical packages MINITAB, SAS and S-Plus.
  5. The ability to use the microcomputer to implement the various statistical packages efficiently and productively.
  6. Preparation for graduate work in statistics or for employment in business or industry as a statistician.
