The Theatre Program, located in the SCSU Performing Arts Center, serves the university with comprehensive theatre training and a full production schedule. The program uses conservatory-style instruction and mentoring, training students in the areas of producing, managing, designing, acting, directing, and working in the world of the performing arts. With its rigorous academic courses, its varied production program, its array of facilities and equipment, and its professional standards, the theatre program has earned accreditation with the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST), placing SCSU's theatre among a select group of accredited theatre programs nationwide.
The program participates actively in national professional organizations. For example, faculty and students regularly attend the regional and national conventions of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) and the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival (ACTF), where students compete for scholarship prizes with their acting and design skills.
Theatre Program Mission
The theatre is a medium of art, communication and collaboration that is continually altering as it reflects the age in which it exists. It is the aim of the program to provide students with a curriculum that is not only rooted in the traditional fundamentals of the theatre art, but also incorporates the latest theoretical and practical discoveries and developments of our time. Students apply their knowledge through a fully produced theatrical season.
