English Requirements and Exemptions

International applicants are required to demonstrate English Proficiency to be considered for admission to all graduate programs on campus and online.

Accepted Exams and Minimum Scores

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
    • Scores of 100+ will be fully admitted to any graduate program
    • Scores of 79 – 99 on the Internet-based exam with no subscore below 17 will be required to complete EAP 511 and EAP 512 with provisional admission to a graduate program
    • Scores of 61-78 must apply for admission to and complete Intensive English Center Level 5 before starting any graduate coursework
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
    • Academic Test only - General Training test is not acceptable
    • Scores of 7.5+ will be fully admitted to any graduate program
    • Scores of 6.5 – 7.0 will be required to complete EAP 511 and EAP 512 with provisional admission to a graduate program
    • Scores of 5.5 – 6.0 must apply for admission to and complete Intensive English Center Level 5 before starting any graduate coursework
  • Duolingo English Test
    • Scores of 120+ will be fully admitted to any graduate program
    • Scores of 105 – 119 will be required to complete EAP 511 and EAP 512 with provisional admission to a graduate program
    • Scores of 95-104 must apply for admission to and complete Intensive English Center Level 5 before starting any graduate coursework

Exemptions

  • U.S. Citizen or permanent resident
  • Applicants who will hold a baccalaureate or graduate degree from an accredited college or university in the United States, Canada (English-speaking) or from a country whose sole official language is English
    • Medium of instruction is NOT an acceptable alternative
  • International students who have already completed SCSU's Intensive English Center Level 5 program MAY be exempt
    • Individual academic programs may require a proficiency exam even after completion of IEC Level 5
  • H4 Visa holders
    • Keeping your H4 Visa?
      • No language proficiency exams or financial documents required
    • Changing to F1 Visa?
      • English proficiency exam and supporting documents must be submitted with an application for admission
