J's Junction Grand Opening
J's Junction in Becker, Minnesota
As a business management major at St. Cloud State University & Johnson & Wales College in Providence, RI, I have always wanted to have a business. Never knowing what it would be, but always looking. The timing finally was right with a location, finances, and a partner in my sister Jeanne. Jeanne has been retired in her career job but has worked many years in the gift shop industry. Both her and I have retail experience, the gift of gab, an eye for cute things, and the energy to bring this together. Once I saw this location, I knew it was the time and place to try my “bucket list” item. I had accumulated many vintage pieces over the years so I guess I had been working on what the store would be or based on. Jeanne also had some unique pieces. We attended a buyer’s wholesale mart and inquired with some local artisan friends and are welcoming them and their craft into the store as well. We are so excited to make this happen and appreciate the support of the SBDC, community, family, and friends.
The Small Business Development Center has been an integral part of our start up gift shop business. I was aware of services similar to theirs over the years but was in direct connect with them through Sherburne County Government Center Business Lab. I made an appointment and met with Holly to make sure I was on track with starting the business my sister and I were embarking on. Not only did she listen to our plan and ideas, but she asked relative questions as we went along to make sure all things were covered.
We, at this time, did not need the start up funds but were given a list or resources should we need. She gave advice from experience and stories from others long the way.
She also connected me with a graphic artist who was able to help see our vision and create a logo and flyer for our business needs. She did a great job by incorporating a favorite thing of my sister’s and mine to create our vision. The 3 of us would review and comment as the design came about beautifully.
The SBDC/Holly would on occasion ask if there was anything needed or make sure things were coming along o.k. as a great source of support.
Now the day of opening is here. She is graciously coming to show her support and excited for us!
It has been so helpful having someone in our back pocket as we venture into our new endeavor.
I am so thankful for them and plan to attend future classes and seminars offered as well.
