Student Opportunities
From leadership opportunities and creative outlets in student publications to working hands-on with English language learners and student writers through graduate assistantships, English offers many chances to get involved and showcase your growing skills.
Publications
Professionalizing opportunities for students to engage with include two literary and arts magazines, Upper Mississippi Harvest and Kaleidoscope and an annual portfolio of student research in linguistics. Submit your work or join an editing and publishing team.

Scholarships
Apply in early March for one of our more than a dozen scholarships worth up to $1,000 for students and master’s degree candidates majoring or minoring in English.
Become a Writing Center Coach
Students may coach other students with their writing after receiving professionalizing training through ENGL 353 (for undergraduates) or ENGL 654 (master’s degree candidates).
Become a Tutor
English majors and minors are among the student volunteers from across campus who stand to gain cross-cultural experience by working with international students in the Intensive English Center.
Internships
Develop your workplace communication skills with an internship.
Practice your Presentation Skills
Many of our students present their research. This provides our students an opportunity to gain experience with the presentation of their research results to a larger community.
Graduate Assistantships
Master’s degree candidates may apply for graduate assistantships in the Writing Center, in teaching English as a second language courses, or in teaching composition (English 191), which serve both as outstanding professionalizing experiences and as support for financing their education.
