Undergraduate and Graduate Education in Exercise Science
4+1 Program Details
Five-Year B.S./M.S. Track
The Five-Year B.S./M.S. track is an accelerated, rigorous program option available to undergraduates who maintain a 3.3 GPA and who show the ability and discipline necessary to successfully complete an accelerated combination undergraduate and graduate program in economics.
The track allows a student to receive the Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and the Master of Science in Clinical Exercise Physiology in five years. This special undergraduate core is more rigorous than the traditional undergraduate core. Students are allowed to take 500-level and 600-level courses prior to graduation and count some or all of these credits towards the bachelor's degree. However, students may opt out early with a bachelor's degree provided that certain course requirements are satisfied.
Transfer students can complete the bachelor's and master's programs in five years if they complete the Minnesota Transfer Pathway in Exercise Science or an Associate of Arts degree in Exercise Science from a Minnesota State institution.
Five-year B.S./M.S. track details
Students completing the 4+1 program need to take steps at certain points in their third and fourth year of the undergraduate program to ensure admission to the Clinical Exercise Physiology program including:
- Application for early provisional admission through the School of Graduate Studies occurs in the spring of year 3.
- Students should apply for early provisional admission through the School of Graduate Studies online application upon successful completion of 90 undergraduate credits with a 2.75 or higher GPA. Provisionally admitted students will be coded as five-year students and a degree audit (DARS) created to reflect the requirements of the accelerated track.
- An undergraduate degree in Exercise Science will be conferred in the spring of year 4 following completion of a minimum of 120 credits.
- Credits completed at the graduate level are used to fulfill requirements at the undergraduate level. EXSC 560. EXSC 575, PESS 673, and 3 graduate elective credits (12 total) will count towards both the undergraduate degree and the graduate degree. All credits required for the graduate degree will be completed at the graduate level.
- Students may opt out early with a bachelor’s degree provided certain course requirements are satisfied and completion of 120 credits.
- Application to the master’s program occurs at the beginning of the Fall semester of year 4 with entrance occurring in the spring of year 4 conditional on acceptance by the graduate school, completion of application materials, and a GPA of higher than 3.0.
