Interlibrary Loan
What is Interlibrary Loan?
When items are not available in the University Library collections, St. Cloud State University faculty, staff, and students may use Interlibrary Loan (ILL) to request items from other institutions.
- Requests take between 2-10+ days to be processed.
- Due date is determined by the lending library.
- Most articles are delivered to you via email.
- Photocopies of articles may be kept.
- You are responsible for the care and prompt return of borrowed materials. You will be billed for lost, damaged, or overdue materials.
- Sign in with your StarID and password. If you have trouble signing in, please contact the Circulation desk at 320-308-3083.
- For citation type, select a book or article.
- Fill out as much information as you can. Fields noted with an asterisk (*) are required.
- If applicable, please write "I am a distance student" in the Comment field and include your current mailing address.
- Click on Send Request.
Status of your request
You can check the status of your ILL requests by logging into My Library Card.
Occasionally, ILL cannot fill your request because we are unable to identify a lending library or document supplier for the item you requested. You will be notified about any request that cannot be filled.
Requesting a renewal
The lending library decides whether to grant a renewal. Send your renewal request to ill@stcloudstate.edu. Please include the title of the item, your name, and your SCSU TechID. Please monitor My Library Card for the new due date.
Please email the ILL office at ill@stcloudstate.edu or call 320-308-3083 with questions.
Replacement charges
You will be billed for the replacement of items if they are lost, damaged, or overdue. The cost of replacement is determined by the lending library.
Overdue ILL items may result in a block on your library account until the items are returned or the replacement charge is paid.
Difficult items to borrow through ILL
Some items are difficult to borrow through ILL. These items include:
- Digital requests for more than one chapter of a book – request a physical item loan instead
- E-books
- Textbooks
- Journal articles published within the last six months
- Reference materials
- Theses
- Rare books
- Conference proceedings
Important copyright information
WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials.
Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is
not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research". If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use", that user may be liable for copyright infringement.
This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
