Warm and Dry July 2005 but Not Record-Breaking
Saint Cloud Weather Summary for July 2005
July 2005 was a huge contrast to last year's cool summer. The average temperature of 72.9°F was 3.1°F above normal. This made July 2005 the warmest since 1988. However, the Hot July 2005 Saint Cloud page shows that July 2005 ranked only 32nd of the 125 Julys in Saint Cloud history. So, July 2005 was extreme only relative to recent Julys, because the Julys since 1988 have been quite cool overall.
In fact, there were no records set in Saint Cloud during July 2005. Saint Cloud came one degree short of matching the 9 consecutive days with above 90 degree highs set in the Twin Cities. The 9 days with a 90-degree high ranks in a tie for 16th place. The humidity of July 1995 was significant. There are no long-term dew point records in Saint Cloud, but warm low temperatures can demonstrate the humidity. The average low temperature of 61.2°F, 3.3°F above normal, ranked warmer than the overall temperature. Only 2002 had such a warm low during the past 18 years. In addition, there were 4 days with a low of 70°F or warmer during July. That tied July 2002 and other years for the 8th most 70°F lows on record. In fact, it was only the 2nd July since 1975 with so many warm lows.
The highest temperature during July 2005 reached 96°F on July 16th. However, there were no record high temperatures set this month; in fact, the warmest temperature of the year remains 98°F, set on June 23. Saint Cloud hasn't had a hotter high temperature since 1990.
Buried under the heat has been the dry weather between mid-June and the end of the July. The July rainfall totalled 2.11 inches, about an inch and a quarter below normal. However, the rainfall shortfall from June 15 was as high as 2 3/4 inches by July 19. Some heavy rainfall from thunderstorms on the 20th, 23rd, and 25th (accounting for 1.79 inches or about 85% of the total rainfall for July 2005) eased the dry period somewhat, but a dry last week has bumped the deficit back over two and a quarter inches. Since water usage goes up in the hot weather, this deficit is worse than you would normally expect.
