September 2005 Made the Warm, Wet Dozen
September 2005 Saint Cloud Weather Summary
September 2005 in Saint Cloud continued the late August trend of being warm and wet. There were 5.54 inches of rain recorded at the Saint Cloud Regional Airport in September. This total was more than two and a half inches above normal, making September 2005 the 12th wettest September in Saint Cloud records. The heavy September rainfall was the most recorded in Saint Cloud since 2002 when 6.67 inches fell. The September rainfall record is 10.72 inches in 1926, one of only 5 months in Saint Cloud records with at least 10 inches of rain.
The main rainfall event of this wet September was the heavy rainfall on September 12. 2.60 inches of rain fell at the Saint Cloud Airport in a storm that dumped more than 6 inches of rain in Zimmerman. The 2.46 inches recorded at Saint Cloud State University was the 9th heaviest recorded rainfall in the past 15 years. This was just one of four major storm events that took place in September. While none of the other events produced as much as an inch of rain in Saint Cloud, parts of central Minnesota were hit by the wind damage of the September 21 storm, which ended up producing widespread wind damage, one death, and two tornadoes in the northern suburbs of the Twin Cities.
The heavy rainfall during the past 6 weeks (more than 7 inches of rain in Saint Cloud) has narrowed the regional of below normal growing season (April 1 - September 30) rainfall to a narrow strip along the Saint Croix River into the Arrowhead (see September 26 rainfall map from State Climatology Office).
Temperature-wise, September 2005 also ranks 12th. The average temperature was 63.2°F, 5.8°F above normal, so September 2005 tied with 1898, 1905, and 1919 for the 12th warmest September on record. When was it warmer? How about last September, which ranked as the 9th warmest September on record with an average temperature of 64.1°F. Two chilly days, September 28 and 29, kept September 2005 from cracking the top ten. September 29 did produce the first frost of the year in some areas, but not officially at the Saint Cloud Airport. The average date of the first frost in Sember 22. With warm weather expected through the weekend, it is likely that the first frost in Saint Cloud will be the one of the latest 10 years in Saint Cloud records. You can check the Minnesota median first/last frost dates from the Minnesota State Climatology Office.
