About Handshake
St. Cloud State University uses Handshake, a comprehensive career portal, to connect students and alumni with resources and employers to facilitate both career development and job and internship searching.
Students and alumni have access to a wealth of information, resources, and opportunities through Handshake, such as:
- Full and part-time jobs (including work study), Internships, and Graduate Assistantships
- Confidence and skill building resources like Candid Career and Big Interview
- Career Coaching Opportunities, including Mock Interviews, Resume Reviews, and LinkedIn Reviews
- A broad array of career events and job and internship fairs
- Appointment scheduling (available to alumni for up to one-year post-graduation)

Recruiting Student Workers & Graduate Assistants
To post an open position, you will need to log into your employer account. If you need help logging in, an account set up or posting a job, contact Eric Hanson or call 320-308-0061.
- From the employer home page click on the blue Post a Job button:
- Complete all questions in the New Job form:
- Job Title: Include your office name in the job title. Example: Student Outreach Intern – Career Center.
- Job Type: Select On-Campus Student Employment.
- Is this a Work Study Job? If you answer yes, only work-study eligible students can see the position.
- Description: Ideally this should include both job duties and learning outcomes the student can expect from the position.
- Estimated Salary: Be sure you are paying at or above current minimum wage.
- Job Location: This is asking for city/state.
- Does this Position Require US Work Authorization? Click "no" to allow International students to apply.
- Required Documentation: Be aware that positions with less complicated application processes often have more applicants. What documentation is essential for evaluation?
- Schools Tab: Be sure to type in and select St. Cloud State University.
- On the Preview Tab, carefully review your post and make any final edits before saving.

Helping Students Navigate Handshake
- Students with complete Handshake profiles receive 5x as many views from employers?
To allow an employer to view a profile, student’s privacy setting must be set to either Community or Employers.
- Click on the circle with your picture or initials in the upper right corner and select My Profile from the drop down:
- Click on Make Profile Public to Employers:
- Steps you can suggest to students to make their profile stand out to employers.
- Add to “My Journey.” What are you passionate about? What are you looking for on Handshake? What are your experiences or skills?
- Fill out your education section! Click the pencil next to your name and make sure you have your Major and Start/End Dates filled out.
- Fill out your Work Experience. Make sure it has a Job Title, Employer, Time Period, and Location.
- Add Organizations and/or Extracurriculars. Looking to gain more experience in this area? Check out HuskiesConnect to find an organization to join!
- Add multiple skills, documents, courses, and projects. What are some projects you have been a part of? Some ideas are publications, photos, presentations, pitch decks, websites, etc…
- Add a profile picture!
Requesting/Reporting Internship Experiences
For more information on Internship requirements, approval process, and contact lists visit the Career Center Internships Page.
- Click Career Center in the upper right corner of the page:
- Click the third box from the left, labeled Experiences:
- Click blue Request an Experience button:
- Student will complete the form and click green Request Experience button at the bottom right when done.
Approving Internship Experiences

The process:
- Faculty informs the student to report their internship through Handshake.
- The student logs in and clicks on Career Center then Experiences.
- The college's or school's designated contact for that student's major will start the workflow to send emails for the necessary approvals.
- When all approvals are obtained, the college's or school's designated contact will receive an email stating the internship has been approved.
When you get an email from Handshake titled An Experience Needs Your Approval:
- Click on the link in the email.
- Review the information the student submitted.
- If you approve of the internship, click Approve Experience.
- If you do NOT approve of the internship, enter in a reason and click Decline Experience. The college's or school's designated contact will receive an email of the non-approval.
- The student will NOT receive notification that their internship wasn't approved.
