Student Legal Services Program

Do you have a legal question or problem you would like to discuss with an attorney?

The Senate Finance Committee, a part of Student Government has funded a Student Legal Services Program for current St. Cloud State University students.

You can make an appointment to meet with the contracted attorney for any legal concerns you may be experiencing.

Description of Services

Initial Consultation

The attorney will meet with you for a FREE initial consultation to assess your situation, make suggestions about how to proceed, discuss whether you need to retain legal counsel, and how to find an attorney. The attorney will provide guidance, but NOT continuing representation. You should NOT expect the attorney to represent you beyond the consultation visit. There is a limit of one consultation per student per semester.

Follow-up Action

Under certain circumstances, the attorney may wish to schedule additional follow up appointments with you. This will depend on the legal questions or if the legal issues require additional research. Because funds for the program are limited and demand for services is high, the attorney must limit follow-up time. The attorney will NOT take any action to act on your behalf but will advise you on your best course of action moving forward.

Hiring the Attorney on Your Own

The attorney may recommend you retain an attorney or advise you on how to apply for court appointed counsel, if appropriate for the situation.

No Legal Services for Matters Concerning the University

The attorney is strictly prohibited from offering information or advice on any matters concerning St. Cloud State University and its administration, faculty, and staff.

Do NOT attempt to schedule a Legal Services Appointment if your legal issue concerns St. Cloud State University, administration, faculty or staff.

How to sign up to see the Attorney

Fill out the contact form in HuskiesConnect. Once your student status is verified, your information will be sent to the attorney. How to Prepare for your Appointment with the Attorney

IMPORTANT! You must be prepared to email the attorney any documents that are relevant to your legal question or situation. Some examples of documents to email the attorney in advance of your scheduled meeting may include: Citation Number, Criminal Complaint, any Motions or Petitions, Lease, etc. The initial consultation is your best chance to explain the situation that caused you to seek legal advice.
