Electrical and Computer Engineering

Mission, Goals and Objectives

Mission Statement

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at St. Cloud State University continues the tradition of excellence and opportunity by providing advanced instruction and training for its students emphasizing practical aspects of electrical and computer engineering to meet the needs of the regional and state economies. This mission is fulfilled by achieving the Educational Objectives and Departmental Objectives.

Educational Objectives

The objectives are based on the departmental mission and the perceived needs of our constituents, and consistent with the mission and vision of the institution and college.

  1. Our graduates will successfully practice their chosen profession in electrical/computer engineering or related fields.
We define “successfully practice” as demonstrating one or more of the following attributes:
    • Technically independent
    • Taking on increasingly complex tasks
    • Developing solutions to important problems
  2. Our graduates will practice their chosen career in a professional manner.
We will train and encourage graduates who:
    • Demonstrate communication skills on the job
    • Participate collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams
    • Continue their education after graduation
    • Practice engineering in an ethical manner
    • Are active in professional or community organizations outside of work

Program Educational Objectives last reviewed December 2021.

Departmental Objectives

  1. The department will implement a program of continuous improvement to insure that our degree programs are of high quality and relevant to our constituencies.
  2. The department will maintain appropriate accreditations for our programs, and encourage participation in college and university accreditation activities.
  3. The department will pursue and maintain ties to industry and other institutions.
  4. The department will create an environment that values teaching effectiveness, scholarship, research, professional service and study in order to meet the above goals.

Outcomes

Engineering programs must demonstrate that their students attain the following outcomes

  1. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering
problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and
    mathematics
  2. an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that
meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and
welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and
    economic factors
  3. an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  4. an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in
engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must
consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic,
    environmental, and societal contexts
  5. an ability to function effectively on a team whose members
together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive
environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
  6. an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation,
analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw
    conclusions
  7. an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using
    appropriate learning strategies.
