About Academic Accommodations

Graduate with service dogAcademic accommodations are legally mandated modifications, adjustments, auxiliary aids, and/or services that give a student with a disability an equal opportunity to benefit from the educational process.  

Academic accommodations may include: 

  • Adjustments to classroom environment or task that allow for participation in the educational process 
  • Modifications to policies, practices, or procedures  
  • Accessible instructional materials and effective communication services 
  • Other adaptations or modifications that enable a student to enjoy the benefits and privileges of the university’s programs, services, and activities. 

Common Accommodations

Accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis through an interactive process involving student, SAS Staff, available documentation, and [at times] faculty.  

  • Extended testing time 
  • Alternative testing locations 
  • Alternate formatted textbook/materials 
  • ASL Interpreters  
  • Captioning 
  • Audio recording lectures 
  • Assistive technology 
  • Accessible furniture  
  • Priority registration 
  • Other accommodations as deemed reasonable  

SAS Support Services

Information for Prospective and Current SAS Students

  • Students are responsible and empowered to disclose their need for accommodation and their disability to SAS.
  • Students can request accommodations at any time but are encouraged to communicate needs early and often.
  • Accommodations are not retroactive and cannot address issues/concerns that have already happened.
  • Students are responsible for utilizing approved accommodation to their discretion.
  • Students must follow SAS policy/procedures for implementation of accommodation.
  • Students must meet and maintain academic qualifications and essential institutional standards of a SCSU student.
  • Students must follow the university’s Student Code of Community Standards.
